Description
ENGLISH ABSTRACT This article traces the evolution of the perception of time from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, before moving to a brief analysis of the literary works of Petrarch in comparison to Dante, with regard to their concepts of time and approaches to the idea of eternity. Building on my reflections in "Il concetto del tempo nella Divina Commedia" (Fu Jen Studies 35), it emphasizes the different sensibility with which Petrarch perceives the flow of time in an era that--with the advent of the mechanical clock and new urban rhythms of work--was keenly aware of time's fugacity and the need for human control over it. Recognizing the impermanence of existence and of human passion, Petrarch intensified his efforts to attain an eternity of fame and of love for God. However, his vision of eternity still betrays an excessive attachment to merely terrene impermanence.
